Symposium registration now open

• We warmly welcome those interested in participating as listeners (either in person or online) to register by 31 July 2026.
• Registration costs 30 euros for all participants (whether speakers or listeners, attending in either in-person or online format).
• Membership of SoMoS is not required to participate in this symposium, but participants must be ICTMD members in good standing at the time of completing symposium registration.

Call for participation in symposium’s special “Open Session”

In addition to the symposium’s oral presentations and keynote lecture, the programme will feature an “Open Session.” This provides opportunity for participants informally to present ongoing or planned research projects, and to receive feedback from other attendees. It could also be used to discuss tools and methodologies that are relevant to the SoMoS study group. 

Open Session participants are free to choose the format of their informal presentation (a poster, a laptop, a pen and a sheet of paper, etc.), as long as they can be technically independent. Symposium attendees will be free to move around the room (like in a poster session), with ample time to engage with presenters discussing their work simultaneously in different parts of the space. The Open Session session will take place in-person in Lisbon only.

• - If you would like to present your ongoing or planned research at this Open Session in Lisbon, please express interest by writing to the Program Committee Chair, Samuel Horlor, at s.p.horlor@durham.ac.uk.
• - Please include an informal description of your presentation plans (no more than a few sentences) by 1 July 2026.
• - Informal enquiries and questions are also very welcome.  

A reminder of the symposium themes:

The ICTMD Study Group on Sound, Movement, and the Sciences (SoMoS) aims to bring together scholars whose work combines approaches from ethnomusicology and/or ethnochoreology with those from the sciences – to explore sound and movement in music and dance contexts. Here, the sciences are broadly defined, including but not limited to disciplines such as cognitive science, psychology, linguistics, computer science, statistics, mathematics, biology, physics, and medical science.
