A Non-Governmental Organization in Formal Consultative Relations with UNESCO

Business Meeting on September 14

Dear colleagues,
You are warmly invited to the upcoming business meeting of the ICTMD Multispecies Sound and Movement Study Group. Alongside updates on forthcoming activities and administrative matters, we will hold a discussion related to our shared area of inquiry.
Alex South and Marie Comuzzo will open a conversation on whales, grief, and sound/music. Guiding questions include:
• What does it mean to grieve for and with whales?
• How might we approach this through sound and/or music?
• How might such practices reshape human–whale relations?
To help frame the discussion, we encourage you to read:
• Barbara J. King, “Sea of Emotion: Dolphins, Whales, and Turtles,” in How Animals Grieve (2013).
• Giovanni Bearzi & Maria Reggente, “
Epimeletic Behavior” (2018).
And to listen to:
WAILS: Songs for Grief (ahlayblakely.bandcamp.com)
• Alex South, Keening — Song of the Stranding (
alexsouth.bandcamp.com)
Alex will also briefly introduce his recent postdoctoral project.

The business meeting will take place online on 14 September at 15:00 CEST. Zoom details will follow in a separate message a few days before the meeting.
